5 Things Not to Do as an Aspiring Music Artist

  1. Say you’re going to make it big, and have no plan.

Sure- it’s very possible that you will make it big, however- it’s also very possible for the 100,000 other music artists who have said the same thing. Not trying to be mean, but honestly- if a music industry professional got paid for each artist who told them this- they’d be rich. (Unfortunately, even after saying this, there are going to be thousands of you who still believe you can make it big with no plan- please SHIFT YOUR MINDSET!)

  1. Go off on your fans.

Fans are your bread and butter. If you piss off your fans, then nobody is going to care- not even your management, marketing team, brand sponsors- not your landlord or mortgage company, or lender, etc. The bottom line is that if there are no fans, there is no business. SO be kind to your fans. They have bad days just like you do. Take a breather and realize that we are all human 🙂

  1. Tell a potential contact that they’re missing out on working with you

This is never a good strategy because it comes across as a threat, and I’ve never met anyone who enjoys a good threat from time to time. You’ll get written off real quick, and the more writing off that happens, the fewer opportunities that present themselves.

  1. Get nasty with someone who doesn’t respond on social media

Frustration is part of any business, and 9/10 the frustration is there for a reason. It’s better to get to the root of the problem and to understand the reason as to what is causing your frustration. I guarantee you’ll have more success this way.

  1. Brag about your social media channels when you paid for bots

It may not seem that transparent to a fan, family friend, or those around the way- but when a professional logs on to your profile, it will be pretty evident to them as to where you have spent your time and money in promotions. Whether it be lack of engagement, language, or a profile audit- a music industry professional is going to know. So take your time and develop your numbers realistically.
